Not A Fake Candidate . . .

For a change, it looks like voters are going to have a real choice in the 116th Assembly District this year. It's Johnson v Destito, and unlike Republican challengers of the past, Johnson is no fake candidate.

Mr. Johnson is very articulate and to the point. One regrets he did not run for Congress. Unfortunately for the area there are two things at play. First, the political establishment of both parties are supporting Destito. Second, a Republican in the State Assembly is completely irrelevant due to the overwhelming downstate influence. So, Johnson will be a good protest vote but little else.

I disagree. A vote for Johnson will be a chip at the "political establishment" of both parties which have become self serving. Chip-Away!

Destito must go she is nothing more than Silver's puppet.She will have a GREAT pension so don't cry if she goes away.

Nice to see the change of heart from the posts back in April, including all of the comments.

In '08 the Republicans fielded a dud, which raised skepticism among some people including me.

I've seen and heard enough from Mr. Johnson during the last few weeks to conclude that this time, he's the "real deal."

A lot of people were quick to judge back then despite my assurances that Greg was the "real deal" and my plea to give the guy a chance. Perhaps there's something to be learned here. I think people should go back and read those comments from April. Some were pretty harsh. Maybe if more people got behind Greg early on he'd stand a better chance ..... although a chance he still does stand.

There are two points not be addressed. They are critical to understanding the area within the context of good candidates as Mr. Johnson. First, the district in which he is running was carved out to fit Mrs. Destito in several respects giving great weight to a registration advantage and the "Rome" factor. Second, Mrs.Destito is the candidate of a good slice of the Republican establishment including the County Executive who controls a good deal of patronage and money. So, the game is rigged before the ball is tossed in the air.That goes to the fundemental reason why the same people get elected time after time around here.

In April, through now, the fool had done NOTHING in terms of getting his platform out there. Maybe he should have been more proactive "in the beginning."

But for my disgust with destito, I would not vote for a silent candidate. Still can't find a website for him, or anything publishing his platform or plan for change...

The problem is that it is almost impossible for outsiders to raise money and the media provides little to no "free" media. So, unless people as Johnson are willing to spend alot of their own money, they cannot wage an effective campaign. The fact that his party gave him little or nothing in $$ proves the point made in an earlier post; the Republican hierarchy supports her.

By the way, this is classic token candidate behavior:
1. announce early on that you're running for an office;
2. attack the incumbent for their wasteful behavior in office;
3. disappear for most of the campaign season while the incumbent has numerous photo ops and other campaign ads;
4. in the final two or three weeks, come out in full force;
5. fail to get your name out and keep your name in the press; and
6. fool everyone to believe you're legitimate after your period of silence.

Let's face it, we all knew he posed no real threat to destito. But I voted for him anyway because I can't stand the incumbent.
