The state Thruway corridor shouldn’t be ruled out as a possible route for New York Regional Interconnect’s proposed power line, U.S. Rep. Michael Arcuri, D-Utica, said Tuesday.Where oh where did the idea of putting the power line down the Thruway come from, anyway? Politicians, perhaps?
Imagine a power line (with 14-story towers) running through the downtowns of Utica, Herkimer, Canajoharie, Amsterdam, Schenectady, etc. etc. . . .
NYRI is a bad idea - - - but forcing them to consider an alternative like the Thruway is simply . . .

That what they did with the Fiber Optic Cable, they buried along the thruway corridor.
You are mixing apples and oranges Waterboy. The Thruway was brought up in the press as an alternative by local politicians long before burial was considered.
If NYRI is going to be made to bury the line along the Thruway, then they might as well to it along their original proposed right-of-way which route may even be shorter. What could possibly be gained by making them put it down the Thruway?
Besides the financial gain to the Thruway Authority (if you call that a gain) I think safety is the other concern. When you run things through peoples back yards over time different land owners “forget” or don’t UFPO ( “call before you dig”) when they dig and you wouldn’t any someone putting a shovel into it or building over it, just like water mains. Out of site out of mind.
That argument won't wash because NYRI was going to go down a railroad ROW... so not exactly out of sight.
The Railroad ROW is not a "main drag" it would be better for a hiking/biking trail. If you’re going to bury on the railway it’s not that accessible for inspection or maintenance the thruway route is, plus you’re not running through backyards. The route may be longer but if down state wants it closer build a power plant down state.
Well, NYRI looks at the RR route as being accessible. How else would they service their towers?
