Leon Koziol, Where are You?

It has been well over a month since Mr. Koziol announced his candidacy for Oneida County Executive -- and we have not heard a peep out of him since.

We had looked forward to his candidacy as an intelligent, articulate alternative to the current powers that be. Appearing to be no "yes" man for anyone, we had hoped that his candidacy would at least result in the thorough vetting of the many issues that plague this county. But while issues presenting opportunities for discussion have arisen, Mr. Koziol is no where to be found.

Leon, what are you waiting for?

Your silence gives us a license to speculate.

Are you waiting for "support" from your Democratic Party? If you are, then a reassessment of your intelligence is in order. You know you were double crossed by your party last year, when they got you to drop out of running for Congress with the promise of an "endorsement" for State Senator -- only to have your party give you a primary. Don't expect any support from them -- but you might get support from grassroots members if you show them that you mean business.

Are you trying to "get even" for what your party did to you last year, by taking up the top spot on the ballot and then intentionally losing the election? If so, how do you know that you are not giving your party exactly what it wants? The public has long suspected that there is no real two-party system operating locally -- just a bunch of insiders making deals with each other behind closed doors. Wouldn't it be sweeter to win the election, and then tell party leaders to go to hell when they come knocking at your door for patronage?

Are you not really interested in the position? That would be understandable. You appear to have a successful law practice that you would have to put aside. Perhaps you are unprepared to make that sacrifice. If so, why did you announce for the position? Was it out of frustration at seeing the region go down the toilet? Or was it merely vanity?

Do you think you need money for advertising? There are plenty of alternative venues for getting your word out. Your opponent has become a boring fixture on WIBX with nothing substantive to say. From your performance in last year's TV debate, you would be much more interesting -- and listeners might learn some things from you. There is also Common Cents, public access TV, your own website, letters to the editor, press releases, etc. etc. These alternatives can be better than advertising because you can develop the issues. People already know your name -- but they need to know how you think.

Do you think you have to have solutions to all our problems? If so, then you would be wrong. Our problems are numerous and complex, and have developed over many years. They will take a long time to solve. "Quick fixes" to old problems have only bought us new ones. What the public is looking for is someone who displays an understanding of the issues that face the county, a willingness to listen to what the public has to say, and an ability to address the public's concerns in arriving at solutions. Do you have these qualities? If so, then show the public that you do.

We know your feelings on the sales tax, and the Indian land claim. What are your feelings about
  • the Consent Order, and the manner in which it was handled?
  • the Park Ave. parking proposal?
  • EDGE's performance?
  • the Marcy Chip-Fab site?
  • the old OC Airport and Homeland Security Training Center?
  • the Griffiss Institute?
  • the region's urban sprawl without population growth?
  • the use of authorities to provide municipal services?
  • continuation of the County's responsibility for the Part County Sewer District?
  • tax-base sharing?
  • cooperation vs. consolidation of services vs merger of local governments?
  • windmills?
  • municipal power?
  • Oneida County's relationship with Herkimer County?
  • etc. etc. etc.
There is plenty to talk about.

Leon, let us hear from you!

Well done! Mr. Koziol needs to step forward and speak to these issues and if necessary run as an independent. We The People need a change from the madness. I for one welcome the debate and give us some real hope that things may finally change.
You did a good job in framing the current issues and the need for accountability of our current appointed and elected officals.
I don't care if it is Mr Koziol or another but we do need change so let the debate begin.

Maybe Mr. Koziol is allowing Picente to keep screwing up. Why stop him now. Why give Picente a look at what is to come. After all, it is very early and there are several hottly contested primARIES.

I think Koziol is doing fine. Don't tip your hand until September and October when voters really start paying attention and Picente doesn't have the time to respond.

The guy is so in love with himself he just thinks the peons should come and bow because the prince is running. Thats his real problem, he's just too self loving to lower himself to campaign. He's fishing on his boat just like he did in the last election.

Mr. Koziol is playing it smart. Leon has to use his own money for this race and even though it is little compared to Picente, Leon will win. The people are too smart now and have seen the ever increasing damage that has been done to Oneida County and are fed-up with politics as usual.
Leon is an advocate for the people and will fight tooth and nail to make changes because he stands up for the people, while Picente cuts his own throat every time he speaks and spends our money with no long term solutions. The group of politicians that have been running this County sure know how to take care of themselves. How about the rest of us! It is the right time for Leon Koziol to make changes and I know he can do it.

Leon will win if he convinces people that he has the "goods" and gets his message out. This means no mis-steps whenever he has the publics ear.

We know that he knows the Indian issue inside and out ... but what else does he know? He was less than impressive this evening at Mr. Picente's sewer meeting. He asked what fines the county would have been facing had the county not signed onto the Consent Order.

DUH, the answer was right in Paragraph 15 on page 4 of the Consent order... which strongly suggests that Mr. Koziol went to a meeting on the Consent Order, but DID NOT BOTHER TO READ IT.

If he is not going to be prepared, he should keep his mouth shut.

Well, Mr Koziol redeemed himself on the Sewer issue this AM on "First Look!" He explained how the problem was created, the technicalities, and the long term implications for the public. He criticized the lack of public involvement in the process of approving the Consent Order. He went on to cite arguments in the County's favor for taking the matter to a hearing rather than settle. He was right on the money! If he hits the other issues this way -- and gets some coverage -- we'll have a real race to vote on.

Mr Koziol, if you get elected, please pay these 911 Dispatchers better, they get crap, and they work harder than those deputies that just give out tickets!! They save lives everyday and make about as much as a Taco Bell employee. Someone please change that!!!!!!

Leon Koziol actually cares about the people of this County and understands how most people feel the crunch everytime taxes go up. He is dedicated and a stand-up and fight person that will get things done. In the case of the power lines that are going to be going through here, Koziol is the only one who can stop it. He sees the wasted monies and how the everyday person has to struggle week to week to make ends meet. The big shots don't have a clue how the PEOPLE in this area, live, work, sweat and die. Loen Koziol is a man of the people and for the people. If the electorate goes along with the coronation of Picente, then let them eat cake.

In regards to the OD article on Sunday, October 14, 2007, the two candidates for Oneida County Executive were interviewed and printed concerning the issues of the County. Unfortunately, the OD( which supports Mr. Picente) had to put a large editorial next to the candidate's views, which supports Mr. Picente. This was terrible and a good example of how unfair politics is in this area! Shouldn't the news media be fair and let the public decide who gets elected rather than trying to influence the readers? I love living in this area so much but when things like this happen it reminds me of a Jimmy Stewart movie where the little guy (Leon Koziol) has to fight to overcome insurmountable odds by the greedy, rich and powerful that rule and run the cities and towns. There is obviously no way Leon Koziol is going to get a fair shake by the OD. But I do think and hope the people are too smart to fall for this one-sided blatant and obvious media attempt to elect their boy. Does the OD really think we are that stupid?
This same old boys-in-the-back-room making up our minds for us doesn't work any more.
