Compassion Aside ...

CBS: Window opens on Obama deportation delay program

Although this program seems to be the compassionate thing to do, there is a much bigger issue here:  the Breakdown of our government's system of checks and balances.

Simply put, the President is ignoring the law.

This seems to be a problem throughout government these days. The legislative branch makes the laws, the executive branch carrys out the laws, and the judicial branch resolves disputes in application of the laws.  Constitutions, Federal and State, set the parameters of what government can and cannot do.

But for government to work properly, there must be mutual respect of one branch for the others, and all branchs must respect the constitution.

The respect is gone.  And when that happens, the logical end result is anarchy or dictatorship.

Obama side steps the Congress any time he does not get his way or when it benefits him politically. This Constitution be damned conduct does not bode well for the future of our nation. One shudders at what the next four years may bring if he is re-elected. The ironic point is that Obama was among those who constantly accused Bush of being"imperial". The left is now silent. For shame!

I don't entirely disagree with you Strike. But isn't that exactly what the Patriot Act does? And that was passed by Congress and signed by the president. Talk about violations of the Constitution. That thing is downright insanity. But the President does have the power of Executive Order. But I guess you would know better than I what that entails. Interesting thought though. This is the kind of discussion we need to be having this year, not all of this personal garbage.

The Patriot Act was approved by Congress. That is why it is called an Act.

What kind of respect has the GOP shown the Executive branch when leaders such as McConnell remark that their main goal is to ensure that Obama loses the next election? The GOP with McConnell & Boehner leading the charge drew a line in the sand the day that Obama took office.

Anonymous -- you are confusing political disagreements with executive branch disregard for laws have already been duly enacted by the legislative branch. Drawing lines in tbe sand is nothing new to the political process ... it is practiced by both sides.

The goal of defeating Obama simply expresses the opinion that his policies and approaches are believed by the opposition party to be detrimental to the country. That is what they are in office for, not to simply "respect" the presidency by going along his agenda.

If my prospects of living in a democracy depend upon its politicians and institutions having respect for each other, I'm in deep trouble. I share with others a tendency to imagine our nation's past as great and glorious, but I'm a product of the Orpheum and Uptown theaters of the 1950's and probably saw too many movies. In reality the men who built this country were more practical than mannerly. They were building empires of industry and government and were not so short sighted that they would tear down institutions and each other rather than take advantage of them. Today's politicians aren't building anything. Because the one with the most advertising money wins the election, the best and brightest have often gone elsewhere. The winners are media constructs, men made small. Our problem isn't a lack of respect. It's a lack of personal greatness.
