Wednesday Is Tar-and-Feathers Day in New Hartford . . .

Rarely have we seen in recent times the public outcry witnessed in New Hartford at recent budget meetings . . . .

However, this morning's Observer-Dispatch reports "Few cuts so far to proposed N. Hartford budget." Only Ms. Krupa seems to understand what is at stake, but everyone else seems paralyzed or fearful of making a move. . . . but there was no paralysis or fear when they voted all the spending increases that got N. Hartford into its fiscal mess.

Significant cuts can and must be made. It is clear that the police department can take significant cuts when they can offer to sell their services to paying clients. . . . and, connected with police, is that patronage mill NH911 call center that duplicates County 911.

The public has spoken loud and clear that they WANT cuts. So, just who does the Town Board represent?

Maybe the public needs to remind them -- again -- on Wednesday.

The size and cost of the town police department is the problem and nobody has the guts to take it on. Why?

Utica also has it's own 911 call center. I can't for the life of me understand why Utica & N.H. insist on duplicating this service when O.C. has a major call center. When are these politicians going to learn that the taxpayers have had enough of being ripped off while the chosen few benefit with patronage jobs, favors, etc.?

I have the guts and I will take it on. Just wait and see. Now that Governor Patterson has signed into law, legislation that deals with Consolidation of Government Services; a Petition with signatures will be served upon the Town Board, if they refuse to take action.

I agree with the petition but it carries little weight legally and does not force action. I learned long ago you can not rationalize with irrational people. Tar and feathers worked in Franklin's time. Sending a message through your efforts is a good start. Next it should be a topic of every board meeting with some actions to be taken. NY Mills is stuck with no services from the town but has a 1600% increase in taxes. Government just doesn't get it. Stop taking the money I earn for more mismanagement and figure out ways to do without for awhile until this mess is straighten out.

NYM does well without the Towns help and we would do better if we didn't pay them more taxes for no services

Your post is an example why much won't change in New Hartford and other areas. Krupa sat there in basic silence during the Reed period of financial debacle. Now, " she seems to understand...." How does she undestand? By proposing a paltry $100,000 in cuts of a $16 million budget? No one in New Hartford has put substantative reform on the table. And, guess what, no one will.
