Royal Succession?

We learned this past week that Mr. Griffo is coveting Congressman McHugh's seat now that McHugh is being appointed to a position in the Obama administration.

Is anyone taking bets that Mr. Picente plans to be appointed State Senator?

Strikeslip your political instincts are quite sharp. It appears that the political dominos are indeed set to tumble in a manner to maximize political positioning with minimizing campaign expenditures.
There is no doubt that Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente has his sights firmly planted on the State Senate seat now filled by Senator Joe Griffo. He will strive to be appointed to this seat in order to allow him a little more time to seek out campaign donations to shore up his war chest.
The Oneida County Democrats must be jubilant at the prospect of having Griffo omitted from the pool of politicians in contention for elected positions in Oneida County. State Senator Joe Griffo has amassed, and has the wherewithal to considerably expand, his political campaign war chest to challenge the too often floundering Democratic Congressman Michael Arcuri. With Griffo out of the way, the Democrats can breathe easier due to the fact that they will not have to expend campaign money to ward off a formidable challenger. The former City of Rome Mayor, former Oneida County Executive and the present NY State Senator, Joe Griffo could turn out to be a major threat to defeat Congressman Arcuri.
One must think of what would become of our career politicians if they had to perform at a real job to earn a living.

If it gets Picente out of Oneida County, then I am all for it. He can do much less harm in a Senate position.

Senators aren't appointed, they're elected.

It's all sickening. Picente needs to be out of government completely. I wish the people of this community would throw out all the scum in both parties. The Republicans need to start with Ray Meier and Annette Foley.

To the Anonymous who stated that “Senators aren’t appointed, they’re elected:”

This is true. However, when a Senator vacates their seat midterm, the leaving Senator’s political party chairpersons of the represented counties, of which the vacated Senate seat represents, will caucus the State Senate party’s leadership for their recommendations for a replacement Senator to serve out the remainder of the term. The Senate political party’s Leader (Democrat or Republican) and sometimes with the blessings of the Governor, will announce their replacement Senate for that Senate district. This is where the term “appointment” derives. But yes, you are correct . . . State Senators are elected. And an appointed Senator will have to be elected as soon as the vacated Senate seat comes up for election. At present, we have a State Governor and State Attorney General who have not been elected for the positions they now hold. They will have to run for these offices at election time if they opt to serve another term. There has been talk of reforming this procedure, but that is all there has been. Just talk.

The Republican Party keeps recycling the same old names and faces thus hastening its decline. New, fresh blood is needed. Griffo will not run for the Congressional seat given the odds of his defeat. This would leave him ripe to lose his Senate seat.

On WIBX last week Picente said that "he has no interest what so ever in being a Senator"

I guess we will see

The real interest in the seat is coming from Ray Meier. The current chaos in Albany may postpone a decision to run.
