Good News X 2 . . . We Hope . . .

A couple good stories from 9/27/11.

First was the opening of the Roundabout at Oneida Square. While the subject of much ridicule and scorn, after traveling through it Tuesday morning and afternoon from two different directions, it seemed to work smoothly. Much less time was taken to get through the intersection whether from Genesee Street (Yield sign) or Park Ave (Stop Sign) than it took before the make-over. Time will tell whether the narrowing to one lane on Genesee Street will be a problem when traffic is heavy or weather bad . . . But so far so good.

Second was the announcement of the 450 new nanotech jobs for Marcy. We've heard such promises before only to be let down . . . but with architectural drawings this time feels like the real deal. Four hundred fifty good paying jobs will be welcome ... but considering that we've lost thousands over many years it is too early to sing "Happy Days Are Hear Again" even if this dream comes true. Troubling is that the State has to practically sell its soul to get private companies to invest in NY. But this seems like a start.

Let's keep our fingers crossed ... on both stories.

Interesting article.

Investing in people and ideas, not thoughtless brick and mortar projects, is a far better way to utilize public monies to leverage private investment. Facilites as this may spawn the creativity and product development that could serve to permanently advance our economy.

Believe it when you see it. I think Albany is repeating the same old song again .Promise them everything and deliver little or nothing that's the Albany mantra. Why are they duplicating what they already have in the Albany suburb?
We are so desperate in this area that even a small kiss on the cheek by the governor has us head over heels in love with the state on NY that has dumped us SO MANY times before.

One would be tempted to be more suspect but it is not really the state bringing these jobs but companies. Plus, here 400 +, high paying jobs is not to be snubbed. Having that level of new brain power coming in may reap benefits in several different ways.

Utica could use 400 high powered brains ... to run for office, to check out the Roundabout, to investigate Princess Ms. Lenska, to write for the OD, to figure out Bill Keeler, to ... oh, wait a minute ... would it be OK if they lived a little bit outside of Utica? Say, like Albany?

Just take a look at the Utica police dept facebook page to see just what we are dealing with in this city. What has happened to our once fine town? Seems as though we have given up on the city and have allowed it to become the run down ,decaying home of users and losers.

People People People...Lets give this a chance to see what happens. The high paying jobs will bring people to the suburbs, not Utica. I dont care where they locate. They would bring a next level of talent and hopefully other support companies will join in. This is high tech, but it doesn't mean transformation will happen over night...My only concern is that our local development groups scare companies away because of the way they deal with them. No they dont have to locate on EDGE property ie the GLDC Real Estate Base. Lets share some of this reginally like the Pumkin Patch in Herkimer Co.
Yes maybe some of this Talent will demand more of our elected officals. I know the new high tech companies think differently about deal making. Believe it or not I think our local officals will have a problem understanding the culture of growth innovation and straight talk...Oh yes, by the way, they do not give you alot of time to play close to the vest. You either on board or they will look for another region to locate in
