Weird Politics . . .

ELECTION WATCH: 47th STATE SENATE DISTRICT
State Sen. Joseph Griffo, R-Rome, is seeking re-election against Working Families Party candidate Michael Boncella. Boncella did not respond to O-D questions about election issues.
Election watch: 116th state Assembly District
Assemblywoman RoAnn Destito, D-Rome, is running for re-election against Republican Kevin McDonald of Whitesboro in the 116th state Assembly District, which includes Rome, Utica and communities in between the two cities. . . . McDonald did not respond to the O-D’s questionnaire on election issues.
What's with these guys, Boncella and McDonald? Too busy campaigning to answer a few questions?

Utica-Rome voters have about as many choices as voters in pre-war Iraq.

Weird Politics . . . That's what brings this region down.

It's very frustrating. I'd have liked the chance to at least consider a candidate other than Destito for the Assembly, but it's hard to convince myself to vote for someone who can't even answer the O-D's questionnaire. I've seen McDonald's name come up only one or two other times through the whole election process - vs. not only seeing Destito at a bunch of events, but getting mailings from her as well.

Is McDonald a sacrificial lamb, put out for slaughter so that "someone" can run against Destito? That hardly seems fair to either him or the voters.

FWIW, he did respond to an earlier request for comment at the O-D. Race for 116th Assembly District: Kevin McDonald Sr. He also has a website, which advertises his fundraiser - on August 30, 2008. Not really sure what is going on here.

A Fake Candidate? A Sacrificial Lamb?

It's hard to run against Destito when the Republicans support her for their own protection year after year. She gets to run nearly unopposed which helps her grow a warchest. Ray Meier and now Joe Griffo protect her in hope of not having a candidate against them. It's a fine deal that has worked for the politicians, but not the people.

Geez...
She's been in her position since I was like in Kindergarden (not to get all Palin on ya).

I can’t help but remember what my late father would say when attempting to teach me the reality of local politics when he would say . . . “Can’t you see, the fix is in!” Okay, dad may not have mastered the English language, but he processed a savvy political instinct that many college Political Science Professors lack. As long as there is a “name” in the opposition’s slot, the “fix is in” and any real competitor is averted from entering the competition. Could we be seeing political collusion AGAIN here in this area? One solitary political fix, under the guise of opposing political philosophies to appease those who think that we have any choice in the matter, seems to have reared its ugly head again. I hope we have not reverted to the 1950’s and 1960’s when this area had two political parties, but actually one unigovernment controlled by a single political boss.

If the above suspicion is true, we need to expose it before we experience a role reversal with the former Soviet Socialist Republic. Even today, Russians think they have a choice when voting, but actually they are just going through the motions. In reality they are voting for a unison political philosophy espousing total societal control of the Russian standard of living. A standard of living that is far below the American standard. This political collusion will never work for us here in Central New York. American politics, like the free enterprise system, is optimized when it is allowed to operate under competition. This is the only way to insure the public with the proper checks and balances that our forefathers intended this country to operate under. Please do not allow this area to revert to the ugliness of the “good old days” when political choice was just an election seasonal façade.
