NHSD: Saving Money or Beating the Clock?

Last week the O-D had an article giving the time-table for the New Hartford School District's capital expansion plan. Bidding will be done in March, supposedly to save money.
Phase 1 includes construction of the athletic field and the auditorium.
Phase 2 will consist of the math, science and technology wing.
The athletic field is going to involve installation of artificial turf. However, the safety of such turf has recently been called into question. Apparently ground up tires are an essential ingredient in the installation, and there is a fear that toxic chemicals from the tires could pose a health risk. It has become somewhat of an issue in Fayetteville-Manlius, which has postponed a referendum for such a field. Legislation has been introduced by Assemblyman Englebright of Long Island to impose a moratorium on such installations, pending a study of the public health aspects of same.

Could New Hartford be trying to beat the clock and get itself grandfathered in?

If it was unaware of the legislation, maybe it should consider F-M's concern and postpone the installation until the health effects of the artificial turf are better understood.

Wouldn't you rather play on grass than cadmium?

What's the RUSH? The New Hartford School District and Superintendent TOLD town residents that CLASSROOMS were imperative.

Now, we see where CLASSROOMS are the last things to be done. This tells me that major renovations told the town residents was ONE BIG LIE or were there more?

The School Board should SCRAP the entire CAPITAL project. Why? Because they do not need it!

Syracuse newspapers have had several big articles on this matter. I have yet to see any concerns being mentioned locally. This is a big issue in the Syracuse area. I have not even seen a tid bit in the Utica papers.
This type of surface is banned in some of the European countires.

Resource man,

I believe at a recent buildings grounds and transportation meeting (which are open to the public by the way) it was indicated that the auditorium and field are being done first for logistical reasons not because of prioritizing athletics over academics.

The reconstructed MST wing will cause several classrooms in that part of the building to be shut down. The board felt the best way to address that concern would be to rebuild the auditorium first then temporarily move those science classes to some of the new classroom space that will be created around the new auditorium while the MST wing is constructed. I believe the alternative would be to hold classes in trailers or the like.

There are also some parking concerns related to the why the capital project is being completed in the order it is, but I forget the specifics at the moment.

To anonymous above, was the school board aware of the controversy re artificial turf? I had not heard of it myself until I heard an Albany radio station commenting about it... and then mentioning the Fayetteville - Manlius school district.

Seems like it is something for the board to consider now. At least postpone the installation until a study has been done.

Strikeslip,

That wasn't mentioned, but the meeting I attended was almost a month ago, the news might not have been out by then. If someone goes to the BoE meeting this Tuesday night that would be a good question to raise though.
